
Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala is the Rector of the United Nations University and an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. He previously served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pretoria. His research applies artificial intelligence across disciplines, including engineering, economics, finance, medicine, and social science. Prof. Marwala is a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Scientific Advisory Board and the author of over 30 books and co-holder of five patents. He is, inter alia, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the World Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Science of South Africa, and the African Academy of Sciences, and a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
