Deputy Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations

Gyan Bahadur Magar is currently serving as Deputy Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations in New York.  

Prior to this assignment, he was Head of Regional Organizations Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal. In that role, he was responsible for Nepal’s engagements within regional and subregional mechanisms, including South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) Initiative.

From January 2022 to May 2024, Mr. Magar served as Chargé d’Affaires a.i./Counsellor at the Embassy of Nepal in Pretoria, South Africa. During this period, he oversaw Nepal’s bilateral relations and cooperation with South Africa and other 18 African countries.  

Between August 2019 and October 2021, he was deputed as Under Secretary at the Northeast Asia Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and also served as Head of the Ministry’s Liaison Office in Birgunj.  

Mr. Magar began his professional career in Nepal’s Civil Service in January 2013.  

He holds M.Phil. in Public Policy, M.A. in English Literature and Political Science, and LL.B. in Law.
