Daniel Shown, Program Director for Open Source with SLU, has expanded its experiential learning program while developing open source ecosystems like the Rerum tools for annotation. Open Source with SLU supports open science and sustainable innovation by delivering value for researchers with software and tools and providing students with realistic software development experience. He brings 20+ years of software development and operations experience across industry and academia. His diverse technical background spans enterprise applications, cloud-native services, and research software engineering across multiple sectors including academia, finance, aerospace, and energy. Shown's professional expertise includes DevOps practices, cloud infrastructure management, product development, and team leadership, complemented by an undergraduate BA in studio art, and post-graduate certificates in Architecture & Systems Engineering and American Studies. His unique combination of technical depth, cultural competency, educational leadership, and proven success in building sustainable open source communities guides his approach to supporting research. As a servant leader, creative systems thinker, and enthusiastic technologist, he strives to make every day better than the last.
